911 Carrera RS 2.7

1972–1973Coupé

Built to clear the FIA's 500-car minimum for Group 4 GT, and in practice the reason the Carrera RSR 2.8 could race at all. The bore grew from the 2.0's 80 mm to 90 mm, made possible by thin NIKASIL cylinder walls that kept room for cooling air between the cylinders. Mechanically it added a stiffened suspension, larger brakes, wider rear wheels and tyres, wider rear wings and the aluminium-framed ducktail — the first rear spoiler fitted as standard to a production car, and still the 911's most copied design cue. In November 1972 the first 500 had sold; Porsche tripled the run by July 1973 and passed 1,000 cars, earning Group 3 homologation as well. Three versions: Touring M472, Sport lightweight M471 and the RSR.

What the sources do not settle (3)

  • The 1,592-unit figure referenced in the project brief could not be confirmed in any source consulted — Porsche states 1,580 and two secondary sources state 1,590; do not publish 1,592
  • Official Porsche 0–100 km/h acceleration and top-speed figures — none published; magazine/test figures quoted instead
  • Split between the three RS versions where Porsche states 1,580 total but per-version counts elsewhere differ slightly
