G-Model & 930 Turbo

Impact bumpers, turbochargers and sixteen years

Porsche began series production of the second-generation 911 in August 1973 for the 1974 model year. The rework added telescopic impact bumpers that met the US 5-mph crash rule, a full-width rear light band, a longer and more comfortable body (4,291 mm) and — for the first time across the range — the 2.7-litre flat-six that had previously been reserved for the Carrera RS 2.7. The launch landed in the middle of the 1973 oil crisis, yet the car became the best-selling 911 to that point.

Over sixteen years the range grew in two directions at once. The normally aspirated cars stepped from 2.7 to 3.0 litres in 1976, to the 180–204 PS 911 SC (1978–83) and finally to the 231 PS Carrera 3.2 (1984–89, with the G50 gearbox from 1987). At the top, the 930 Turbo arrived in 1975 with 260 PS, grew to 3.3 litres and 300 PS with the first production intercooler in 1978, and spawned the Sonderwunsch Flachbau slantnose, the 330 PS Werksleistungssteigerung kit, the 1989 Turbo S and the UK-only Turbo LE.

What the sources do not settle (6)

  • Generation production total: 198,496 (Porsche Newsroom '50 years' and 'seven generations part 2') vs 196,397 (Porsche Newsroom 60-Years press kit datasheet). Both are cited; unresolved.
  • 'G-Series' technically denotes only the 1974 model year — H, J, K and later programme codes followed — but the range is marketed as the G-model from 1973/74 to 1989.
  • 911 Cabriolet timeline: prototype at the IAA 1981, series version at Geneva in March 1982, customer deliveries from August 1982 for model year 1983 (Porsche Newsroom). Sources often compress this to 'from 1982'.
  • Per-variant torque figures for the 2.7-litre and Carrera 3.0 cars are given without engine speed — factory rpm was not published in the sources used.
  • heroImage, timelineImage, model3d and videos left null/empty for the asset agents to fill under /data/assets and /data/videos.json.
