Long-Wheelbase Era

Best-selling 911: longer, lighter, turbocharged

Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 15 September 2011, the 991 was only the third all-new 911 platform since 1963 and, in Porsche's own words, the greatest engineering leap in the model's history: close to 90 per cent of its components were new or substantially redeveloped. The wheelbase grew by 100 mm (3.9 in) to 2,450 mm (96.5 in), the rear axle moved 76 mm (3.0 in) further back for better weight distribution, and an aluminium-steel body cut around 80 kg (176 lb) compared with the 997 despite extra equipment. It introduced the world's first seven-speed manual gearbox, and from the 2013 Turbo onwards offered active aerodynamics and rear-axle steering.

The naturally aspirated 991.1 phase (2011–2015) ran a 3.4-litre Carrera with 350 PS (257 kW; 345 hp) and a 3.8-litre Carrera S with 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp), later joined by the wide-body Carrera 4/4S, the return of the Targa with its 19-second automatic roof (2014), the GTS (2014), a 520 PS Turbo, and the GT3, GT3 RS and 911 R — a 500 PS manual weighing 1,370 kg (3,020 lb), built 991 times. The 50th Anniversary Edition marked half a century with exactly 1,963 cars.

What the sources do not settle (7)

  • Production split between the 991.1 (2011–2015) and 991.2 (2016–2019) phases is not published per variant
  • Per-variant production totals are not published for series Carrera, Targa, GTS and Turbo models
  • Porsche quoted 217,930 991s built to 31 October 2018; the final count is 233,540 (20 December 2019) — both figures cited, no conflict resolved
  • 911 GT2 RS 'Weissach' Package and the Manthey Performance kit are options, not variants: the Weissach Package was an $18,000 option on the GT2 RS (RM Sotheby's, 2019 GT2 RS 'Weissach' lot, Miami 2025), so the car is modelled once, as 991/gt2-rs; the same is true of the GT3 RS Weissach Package
  • 911 GT3 R (991.2, 2019) and 911 RSR (991-generation) are customer/track racing cars rather than road-legal variants, so neither is modelled here; the chapter's single racing entry, 991/935, is a track-only Porsche-badged special built around the GT2 RS
  • No 'GT3 RS Heritage' exists: for the 991.2 phase Porsche published only the GT3 RS (2018–2019) and its optional Weissach Package — no Heritage edition was ever announced (checked against the 991 generation article on Wikipedia, 2026-10-03)
  • 911 Carrera Cabriolet / Carrera S Cabriolet / Carrera 4 Cabriolet and the 991.2 Carrera GTS Cabriolet are still unmodelled: they are real road-legal bodies with no roster id and were out of scope for this pass — flagged for a future one
