911 S/T

1969–1972Coupé

The works endurance-racing S — the customer-facing sibling of the 911 ST, and the direct ancestor of the 60th-anniversary 911 S/T. No two were alike, because they were built to order: some had thinner-gauge steel, some aluminium or fibreglass panels, different fuel capacities and, where FIA rules permitted, no under-seal and minimal paint. The flared arches that debuted here became standard on later 911s. Engines grew through 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and finally 2.5 litres as the rules allowed, the last 2.5-litre unit making 270 PS with a counter-pressure-optimised exhaust, modified heads and an extra oil cooler. Koni or Bilstein dampers and a stiffened shell completed the package. Victories came at Daytona, Sebring, the 1,000 km Nürburgring and the 1972 Targa Florio.
