911 2.2

1970–1971Coupé · Targa

For MY1970 every 911 engine grew by 4 mm of bore to 2,195 cc, and the internal code switched from 901 to 911 — the transaxle, parts prefixes and engravings all changed. There was no plain base 911 in this era: the range was the carburetted 911 T, the fuel-injected 911 E and the 180 PS 911 S. Larger valves, new head gaskets and more cooling fins came with the extra displacement, and the C-series moved the front suspension mounting points 14 mm forward for lighter steering. In MY1971 the D-series added hot-dip zinc rust proofing, door side-impact beams, three-speed intermittent wipers and piston oil squirters, and production continued with the 2.2 units until July 1971.
