"Luxus": for one model year only, the 130 PS staple 911 was given a more upmarket specification — ventilated brake discs, heated rear window glass, brushed-aluminium dash, new door handles — and renamed 911 L. In North America it was the top of the range, because tightening US emissions rules excluded the 160 PS 911 S from the market; the US cars used the same 130 PS engine as the base model. The L was replaced by the fuel-injected 911 E for MY1969, and the middle rung of the range was vacated until then. Among early 911s the L is now the scarcest of the four 1968 A-series variants, and it is the only one-year-only 911 of the 2.0 era.
