911 R

1967Coupé

Developed under Ferdinand Piëch — the first time Porsche built a 911 purely to go racing. Twenty were made in 1967, and because that fell short of the FIA's GT-class production requirement, they were campaigned against purpose-built prototypes. Weight was attacked from every angle: thin aluminium doors, plastic door handles, smaller front and rear indicators, a magnesium-alloy crankcase, twin-spark cylinder heads, a fibreglass fuel tank and a single bucket seat. The magnesium crankcase went into series production on later cars, as did the hydraulic chain tensioners. The six-inch 15-inch forged Fuchs wheels developed for the 911 R were then offered as an option on production 911s — the origin of the wheel that became the marque's trademark five-spoke design.
