Porsche 912

1965–1969Coupé · Targa

The 911's cheap little brother: 911 body and chassis with the 356 SC's four-cylinder engine, launched in April 1965 when 356 production ended. It was a deliberate price weapon — Porsche's 100,000th car was a 912 Targa built for a German police force — and for its first couple of years it outsold the six-cylinder 911 roughly two to one before 911 supply caught up. Visual differences were minimal: silver rather than gold script, a three-dial instrument cluster instead of five, and a plastic steering-wheel rim on base cars. A short run of 2,562 Targas is recorded by the 912 Registry. The 912 was replaced by the mid-engined 914; a 912E with the 2.0-litre Volkswagen four returned for the US market only in 1975–76 (2,092 built), which falls in the next generation's era.
