911 Targa

1966–1973Targa

The world's first production safety cabriolet, patented by Porsche in August 1965 and sold from late 1966 / model year 1967 as a "safety-conscious cabriolet": a fixed brushed-stainless-steel roll-over bar over the rear seats, a removable folding roof panel and a fold-back plastic rear window, with fixed glass available from MY1968. Porsche's concern was the US NHTSA, which was rumoured to be moving against fully open convertibles — and the Targa answered the safety objection without giving up the open-air driving experience. The name honours the Targa Florio road race in Sicily, which Porsche had won seven times since 1956. The Targa became the most-used open 911 body of the era and continued in the line-up for the next generation.

What the sources do not settle (2)

  • Targa introduction date is reported inconsistently: Porsche's own model pages say model year 1967, the Newsroom IAA milestone page says 1965 (patent filed August 1965) and Newsroom's own history text says late 1966 deliveries
  • No total production figure for Targas across the whole 1964–1973 run could be verified
