911 Carrera RS 3.8

1993Coupé

Built to homologate the 3.8 RSR for international GT racing, the Carrera RS 3.8 was an extreme evolution of the 1992 Carrera RS. It wore the wide Turbo body with a bi-plane rear wing and three-piece “Speedline for Porsche” wheels on 235/40 and 285/35 tyres, and drew heavily on 964 Cup parts to shed weight: aluminium bonnet and doors, thinner door and rear quarter glass, deleted sound deadening and undercoating, strap-pull door cards, no air conditioning and a lighter unassisted steering rack. The engine was the M64/04, the 3.6 bored out 2 mm to 3,746 cc, with lighter rockers, individual throttle bodies and a 300 PS output. Porsche made just 55, of which only 11 had the Clubsport package. It won the Spa 24 Hours, Suzuka 1000 km and Interlagos 24 Hours overall.

What the sources do not settle (2)

  • Top speed is quoted two ways in Stuttcars' own 964 comparison material: 169 mph on the RS 3.8 profile page and 174 mph in the specification table. Both recorded; no third source found.
  • Wikipedia calls the engine 3,746 cc “3.8”; Porsche's own badge and press material used 3.8. The exact displacement 3,746 cc is taken from 964uk.com and Elferspot.
