911 RS America

1993–1994Coupé

Porsche could not sell the European Carrera RS in the United States because it could not be made to comply with US federal crash and emissions law, and in 1992 it imported 45 near-identical US-legal cars for a proposed “Porsche Carrera Cup” series that was cancelled before it began. So the RS America was the badge-legal answer: a back-to-basics 1993–94 model based on the US Carrera 2 with a distinctive whale-tail spoiler, a partly stripped interior with flat door panels, fabric door pulls and carpeting, a luggage shelf replacing the rear seats, cloth sports seats, 17-inch wheels and M030 sports suspension. Deleted were power steering, cruise control, powered mirrors, air conditioning, sunroof and radio — with air conditioning, sunroof, radio and a limited-slip differential available as options. In 1992 model year 2,051 Carrera RS and 298 RS Americas were built.

What the sources do not settle (3)

  • This variant id is an APPEND (not in data/roster.json): the 701-built RS America is one of the most significant 964 specials and was absent from the roster.
  • Output is quoted as 250 PS (182 kW) per Elferspot; other sources give 184 kW for the 3.6 M64. Wikipedia describes the RS America as using the standard US Carrera 2 engine and gearbox, which elsewhere is 250 PS (184 kW). The discrepancy is recorded rather than resolved.
  • The related 45-car “Carrera Cup US Edition” import is described in Wikipedia but is a separate, unbadged batch; it is not modelled as a variant here.
