The 911 Carrera opened the 997 era in July 2004 with the return of oval, clear-glass headlights and a 3.6-litre flat-six rated at 325 PS (321 hp) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft). Its rear bodywork sat 88 mm (3.5 in) wider than the 996's, with a drag coefficient of 0.28 and 18-inch wheels as standard. For the 2008 model update Porsche introduced direct fuel injection, lifting the same displacement to 345 PS (340 hp) and 390 Nm (288 lb-ft) while cutting fuel use and emissions, and replaced the five-speed Tiptronic S with the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox. Offered as a coupé and a cabriolet, the Carrera was the volume car of what Porsche calls the most diverse 911 range yet.
