The Carrera 4 brought four-wheel drive to the naturally aspirated 997 range from the 2005 model year, using Porsche Traction Management to split torque between the axles of the wide-body shell. It shares the 3.6-litre flat-six of the rear-drive Carrera — 325 PS (321 hp) in 997.1 form, 345 PS (340 hp) with direct injection from 2008 — but carries extra weight, so 0–100 km/h takes 5.0 s with the manual gearbox on the original figures. Its distinguishing mark is the continuous red reflector strip running between the tail lamps, a Carrera 4 signature retained across the range. Coupé and cabriolet versions were offered, with all-wheel drive remaining a genuine traction advantage in wet and cold conditions.
